Greenhouse Technology Villages (3 Villages)
This Module is championing the establishment of strong agribusinesses among value chain actors in the horticulture sector to attract both Ghanaian youth and international investors hence making Ghana a key competitor in the export of fresh vegetables and cut flowers. The horticulture crops value chain being support include vegetables (tomato, sweet pepper, habanero pepper, cucumber, lettuce, melon, eggplant), herbs and spices.
The strategic approaches of this module are:
- Capacity building support – Government absorbs the full cost of training interested youth in greenhouse technology at the Government Greenhouse Training Schools in Akumadan, Dawhenya and Bawjiase. Training of private and commercial farmers in greenhouse production is also facilitated under this module.
- Reliable business support – There are subsidised greenhouse structures sold by the Ministry to interested farmers. There are also tax and custom waivers for commercial farmers. This module stimulates the formation of FBOs and linkages with markets.
- Effective regulatory management – Promoting the formation of a regulatory body, policies and programmes to support the development of the value chains in the horticultural sector.
The Government under this Module is establishing greenhouse villages in all 16 regions of the country. Youth interested in benefiting from the Government subsidised greenhouse technology training can apply to the Ministry once the advert is placed in the daily’s (Daily Graphic and Ghanaian Times). Individuals and commercial farmers can write to the Ministry for private training sections to be organised for them. The Ministry connects greenhouse owners or managers with skilled labour from the greenhouse training school. Any farmer wishing to buy the government subsidised greenhouses should apply to the Hon. Minister through their respective district and regional department of agriculture.
