Animal Production

Animal Production Directorate (APD) is one of the Technical Directorates of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture. The Directorate has additional mandate to oversee operations of seven National Livestock Breeding Stations located in various parts of the country. 

MISSION

To develop, promote and sustain poultry and livestock production for food security, employment creation and income generation through research, effective technical support, extension services, agro-business and industry, whilst ensuring that gender and environmental issues are adequately addressed. 

VISION

A well developed and efficient institution capable of formulating sound policies, providing effective technical support and promoting sustainable and profitable livestock and poultry industries for food security, nutritional adequacy and enhanced incomes. 

FUNCTIONS

The main functions of APD are:

  1. Ensure effective and efficient implementation of Government policies on livestock and poultry
  2. Promote the development of appropriate technologies on management, breeding, nutrition and housing of livestock
  3. Facilitates the production of superior breeding stock from the indigenous breeds
  4. Promote the development of the dairy industry in the country
  5. Control of animal feed quality  both from local and imported sources
  6. Issuance of permits for animal feed and ingredients for animal feed
  7. Recommending issuance of permits and waivers for importation of animal production inputs
  8. Promote the use of crop residues and agro industrial by – products in feeding livestock and poultry
  9. Promote the improvement of the nutritive quality of rangelands by over- sowing with legumes to sustain ruminant production during the dry season
  10. Promote the establishment of intensive forage production by livestock farmers
  11. Promote the development of processing and marketing of livestock and poultry products
  12. Facilitate the provision of stock water in livestock producing arrears where water resources are scarce

SERVICE TO PUBLIC

The Directorate’s main service to the public is provision of technical advice to prospective livestock entrepreneurs and technical backstopping to the livestock and poultry industry and provision of Subject Matter Specialists and livestock extension services to farmers and industries in the sub-sector.

  • Receive online application from client through the Integrated Customs Management Systems (ICUMS) web-based portal.

  • Minister receives written application from client in addition.

  • Review application

  • Communicate decision to Client and GRA

  • Commercial Invoice

  • Bill of lading

  • Packing list

  • Certificate of Analysis

  1. Sale of livestock for breeding purposes only:
  • Pigs (Large White, Ashanti Black);
  • Sheep (Djallonke, Sahellian);
  • Goats (West African Dwarf, Sahellian);
  • Cattle (Ghana Shorthorn, Crossbred dairy);
  • Rabbits;
  • Grasscutter;

 

  1. Sale of pasture seeds (stylo);
  2. Sale of fresh milk and yoghurt;
  3. Feed mixing (for poultry and pigs);
  4. Artificial Insemination (cattle only).

  1. Farm Manager receives request
  2. Pay approved fees subject to availability

  • Babilie Pig Breeding Station, Babile, Lawra, Upper West (Ashanti Black pigs);
  • Ejura Sheep Breeding Station, Ejura, Ashanti (Djallonke and stylo pasture seeds);
  • Kintampo Goat Breeding Station, Kintampo, Bono East (West African Dwarf);
  • Pong Tamale Livestock Breeding Station (Sahellian sheep and goats, Large White pigs, Ghana Shorthorn cattle, West Africa Dwarf goat, Djallonke);
  • Nkwanta Livestock Breeding Station, Nkwanta South, Oti (Djallonke sheep and West Africa Dwarf goat);
  • Amrahia Dairy Farm, Amrahia, Greater Accra (Crossbred dairy cattle, fresh milk, yoghurt and Artificial Insemination).

  • Arrange a meeting with the clients.
  • Clients are counseled or advised depending on the subject area (eg. Breed improvement, feed preparation and management, forage and range management, dairy development and management, artificial insemination etc
